Be Happy {Painted} Sign–Tutorial

“If you want to be happy – be! – Leo Tolstoy”

For years and years this quote has been one of my favorites! While I was in high school I found it on a fun little yellow poster that was framed in white at a picture store – I bought it as quick as I could and hung it in my room above my bed. I took it with me to college and hung it up across from my bed so I could see it every single night and morning – I even brought it with me to my last job and hung it up in my office. I still have the yellow framed poster – it is in the closet in my daughters room waiting for it’s perfect spot.

I love the meaning behind the saying – If you want to be happy – then be happy! Don’t let anything stop you – being happy is an attitude and even though things get hard or may not go the way we have planned – if you want to be happy, you can!

I have been working on adding coral to my family room and I wanted to do a fun painted sign in coral – I was thinking about what I wanted it to say and the attitude I want to convey in the room and naturally, this saying came to me.

This is such an easy project to make and you can apply any saying you want. First, I painted my MDF board (12”x16”) Deep Coral by Glidden.  I used my Silhouette SD and cut out the saying in adhesive vinyl. I always use adhesive for templates because I love that it sticks securely to the board but that I can easily peel it off. When applying your vinyl – remember to also apply the inside of your letters – {a,b,d,e,g,o, p, q – you get it!!)

After I applied my template to the coral board, I used white paint and a foam brush to paint in the letters. I wanted it to look a bit rustic since I knew that I wasn’t going to be sanding it down – So I painted and sponged a little bit poorly for the effect I wanted.

When the paint was {almost} dry – I peeled off the vinyl. I wanted until it was all the way dry to peel off the inside of the letters.

If you do this and your paint leaks through in a few places…

Simply take a paint brush and touch up the spots…

When it was all dry – I was all finished! I am so happy with how it turned out and the color is perfect!

Here is a close up of the white paint so you can see the effect, my painting had on it. I love that it looks a little rough!

What do you think? Do you love it as much as I do!!??
