Taking back the colors in my home!

The best thing about spray paint is when you decide you don’t really like the color of a home décor item and you can take it outside and spray/re-spray it a color that you like better and in about an hour change the look of your home in small and simple way!

Or at least that is the way I felt last week as I changed a few colors in my house.

I watch the trends and I pay attention to them and sometimes I even try them out – but sometimes they just don’t do it for me.

Like Coral.

I like Coral. I even painted a few thing in my home (yet to be revealed) coral and made this cute coral sign and everything…

but it just didn’t go with my décor – and most of it was repainted last week.

I have even been trying to lighten up my kitchen a bit with whites and green and aqua – but even that combo was making me a little bit crazy and I repainted a few of the white things and brought in reds and oranges and browns - again.

I love greens and browns and reds and yellows and oranges…. they are always my go-to colors of choice.

I told my husband that I wanted to go “outside my box” with color in our home and some of the colors really work for me – like the gray I painted my home. I love it! I was and still am really pleased with the outcome. It is so beautiful! And it works great with all my go-to colors.  But then other color combos I tried – failed in my book. I have seen other people do them and I love their outcome – which is why I wanted to try, but for me – I just couldn’t make it work.

As I was spraying I was asking myself “why did you do this in the first place? You know what colors you love.” and the only answer I could think of was that I wanted to be trendy and cool – and have all sorts of trendy colored projects to show you – but really, that isn’t me. And why was I working so hard and wasting time and money trying to be something that I am not?

I am grateful for this lesson because I love the gray of my home and the green in my kitchen (which goes with the trendy colors or MY colors!) and I wouldn’t have those colors if I didn’t go outside my box a bit –

Have you guys gone outside your box? Do you like the outcome? What colors are your go-to colors?

Stick to what you love.

Confession. I don't have a single piece of painted furniture in my house. I have several pieces that I've bought just to paint, but I just can't do it...I LOVE natural wood.

I know that's not the same as trendy colors, but I think it's sort of in the same vein, right?

I am actually still going to try painting a few items, but if it's not turquoise you will still love me, right?

I totally understand....I know what I like, and I always get mad at myself when I don't do what I like.

I love spraypaint for this very reason! and yes, i often find myself trying the "in" colors b/c i am adventurous like that, and most of the time i like them but sometimes i end up hating them and painting over it with a different color. I guess its part of growing as a designer. You learn what YOU like and what works/doesn't work. No pain NO gain! Your colors are good colors....they go with everything and are pleasing to look at.

Hi Amanda.
I loved this post. I struggle with going outside my comfort zone too. I hate wasting money on projects only to realize I didn't have a real vision for where I was going with them. So, I tend to stick to the same colors...pretty traditional. Anyway, I wanted to stop by and thank you for leaving me a sweet comment about the cutesy clipboard last week over at Posed Perfection. I am your newest follower and would love for you to visit again and maybe even "follow me" back. Have a lovely week!
Blessings,
Nici
